TREASURES OF ULVILA

The Birth of Medieval City of Ulvila, its heyday and why it disappeared under the peat

Welcome to the two-hour tour where you will see and hear interesting stories from the old medieval city of Ulvila.

The city of Ulvila was built on the place, where those days situated a powerful village which has almost dissapeared nowadays (only the Church building survived). The village was located on the banks of the river Vanhakylänjoki (today it is caled Päkkioja), on the place, where it joined the river Kokemäenjoki. Originally this area had a Swedish name Ulfsby, in Finnish – Susikylä (Wolf's Village). Later it was translated into Finnish as Ulvila. The village grew up, thanks to the safe harbor, along the banks of the river Vanhankyläjoki. The open sea, Lattomeri (nowadays there is a field) was so close, so that even large ships from the Baltic Sea could freely moor in the port of river Vanhakylänjoki.

  • In 1551 dark clouds began to gather over the city of Ulvila, when the burghers and merchants were ordered to build a city of Helsinki.
  • In 1556 merchants returned to Ulvila but they had no opportunity to continue their work here as the city lost viability.
  • In 1558 Juhana Herttua ordered the merchants and burghers to move their trade to the newly founded city of Pori, promising them tax-exemption for 10 years.
  • What remains of the old city ?
  • What is the secret of the hill Kellarinmäki ?
  • Why Ulfsby = Susikylä, Ulvila ?

The medival city of Ulvila has remained under the peat on the territory between the brook surrounding the hill Kellarinmäki and the river Kirkkojuopa behind the rye field. Photo by Timo Korkeaoja, 15.2.2008
